Has anyone heard from Artist Nadine Stamm?
This painting was done by my Grandmother, Nadine Stamm. The painting is of my cat from childhood, named Cindy. I have the original and is a very cherished possession of mine. My grandparents lived in Bay St. Louis and owned an art gallery/antique store on Main Street in down town Bay St. Louis. Part of their brick storefront still exists with it being partitioned into two different businesses. They lost their house a long with all of my Grandmother's artwork in Katrina. My grandmother was from South Dakota and moved to Chicago to attend school at the Art Institute of Chicago. She met my grandfather, Richard Stamm sometime after moving and they married. They later moved to Bay St. Louis, MS with their 3 children. They lived and survived through hurricane Camille in 1969. They thought they could ride Katrina out. They were staying at a bed and breakfast along with some friends. The house was swept away. As the house was falling apart my grandfather rushed my my grandmother to top of the building. They opened the door and I remember my grandmother saying it was just water. A roof was passing by and my grandfather told her to jump. She described it as just taking a normal step. My grandmother did not know how to swim. My grandfather made it onto the roof just as the house collapsed. The others that were in the house managed to cling to a tree that has been carved into an angel along the coast line in Bay. St. Louis. I believe one of the survivors has written a book describing their story of the hurricane. The roof that my parents escaped onto miraculously lodged into a tree and prevented them from being washed out to sea. As the water resided, they were able to climb down. They found a house that had a second floor were the people had tried to stack things high. They found a bed that was still dry and stayed their till rescuers came. Their story seemed so incomprehensible to be true. If there was ever a doubt in a higher power, God truly showed his hand with their deliverance from what could have been a great tragedy for our family. In 2005 after Katrina, my grandparents moved into a house on my parents property at the time in Greensburg, LA. Six years later my mother had a house fire and we lost more of her artwork. I had a few prints that I was storing at my moms that were lost and this devastated me. When I was little she did a sketch of the Friendship Oak tree along the coast while I ran around and climbed the limbs. All I ever wanted was a copy of that sketch. I had one and then lost it in the fire. Luckily, I found a note card with this sketch on it tucked away in a cookbook she had gifted me. I was lucky to have had grand parents that lived in the bay, loved their community, talented in their gifts, and gave me such wonderful memories. Both my grandparents passed in 2012. They are both sorely missed.
