It is important to realize that true hip-hop is a lifestyle, not just music. This includes graffiti work, meaningful dances, and, of course, spoken word and hip-hop music, among other things.

Hip-hop music is essentially poetry and helps me with understanding many important issues by providing me with another point of view, especially those from within areas that many ignorantly criticize but have not experienced or understand. This point of view is often enlightening and frequently brings to light problems in addressing issues in the same manner that someone in different circumstances would, that are often never considered by them.

Of course, this is not true for all of what is considered hip-hop. Many things labeled hip-hop carry messages of materialism, sexism, racism (often against races other than African-Americans), and anti-intellectualism. This is the line that I personally draw between true hip-hop and hip-pop.

Hope this helps!
