Some experts believe in a "sliding scale" of sexuality and maintain that everyone is bisexual to some extent, some more than others. Advice columnist Dan Savage has ventured his own opinion that there are more bisexual women than men, stating that in his experience male sexuality is more concrete and female sexuality more fluid and apt to change, although that has drawn criticism.

It is the considered opinion of many researchers that bisexuality is much more common than believed, but that most people settle for one sex or the other and rarely act on any bisexual urges, if they do at all. This is attributed to social pressures to choose one sex or the other.
