You can rap about whatever you want. Generally, real rap about real thingz iz kept UNDERGROUND, while fake rap about fake thingz iz what you usually see on TV. There are many genrez of rap, and some overlap each other. To name a few; political, oldschool, gangsta, revolutionary, hardcore, horrorcore, g-funk, east coast, west coast, dirty south, hyphy, abstract, pop, religious, etc. Personally, I don't limit myself to rappin about one certain thing, or only spittn over a certain type of beat. I rap about what I feel, and what makes sense to me.

For example freestyle rap is not based on what you want or what you have but what environment you're in if youre in a freestyle battle the main thing you're gonna talk about is what you see. Rap about whatever is a big impact on your community. Rap about you and your friends messing around hanging out. Don't be one of those lame rappers who only rap about money, sex, and cars; these rappers take a weak studio sample and make it into 4 songs.

If you want to get REAL inspiration listen to Lords of the Underground, NAS, Big L, Funkdoobiest, Pete Rock, Souls of Mischief, AG; pretty much anyone from the east 1992-1996 would be ill. Also, west coast anywhere in 90's, though I THINK east rap is better. Don't just talk rap, actually rap fast paced with bass line and nice drum beat when you try to think of some verses.

Seriously, it's all about your own influences, environment, and using the tools you've got.

It really depends on the song. Like all popular music, some rap songs are about love (wanting it, missing it, wishing your ex still loved you). Others are more political, about issues that are important in the inner city. And some are about sex. Today's music can be very negative. It seems as though many companies just focus on making millions instead of real music, which in my opinion takes away from originality. I believe that topics in your first rap CD should be edgy, but positive. Listeners don't always want to hear about sex, drugs, and money. Though this is what sells, I wouldn't want to see anyone downgrade themselves for a quick buck. Be creative, write about topics that many people can relate to, but at the same time has a nice groove ( :
