By your vocal range. The alto part in choral music tends to range from the G below middle C to a "high F" (the F above the C above middle C). The soprano part tends to range from middle C to "high A." Whichever of these ranges you're most comfortable in will tell you what you are.

I believe Monica Is an alto 1 :) highest alto part ;)
I like to say she is an alto by default. If you listened to her voice, it is light so you would think either a mezzo or a soprano. However, her technique is so bad, and her voice isn't great either, that her range is very small. If you look at the sheet music of some of her songs, you will see that the range is barely out of tenor on some of them, and in the tenor range on some. Look on musicnotes.com, you can only see the first page, but it usually gives the range of the song. White Horse- Range is G3-A4. That's tenor. Love Story- Range is A3-B4. That's tenor/alto Today was a Fairytale- Range is D3-C5. That's tenor/very alto Forever and Always- Range is G3-D5. That's alto (Hey look she made it out of tenor range!) The list goes on. She shouldn't be an alto, but she is because she doesn't know how to correctly sing. If you saw her performance at the Grammys, the reason she sounded not horrible on her own song was because her songs are written so easily without any hard intervals or anything. They are also very low. Long story short, ALTO!
