when someone refers to being indie, they are usually referring to music, as in "I have an indie record" it means they aren't signed to any major recording company.
Major labels typically operated with significant financial resources, allowing for extensive marketing, distribution, and access to larger production budgets. They often focused on mainstream genres like pop, rock, and hip-hop, aiming for broad commercial appeal. In contrast, independent labels usually had smaller budgets and more niche markets, specializing in diverse genres such as indie rock, folk, and alternative music. This independence allowed for greater artistic freedom and experimentation, catering to specific audiences rather than the mass market.

Because Indie isn't the boring, soulful rock nor is it the weird, stupid rock from previous generations. It is uptempo, light rock that is easy to enjoy. Just listen to Vampire Weekend. That will answer all your questions. Lol
"Indie", short for "independent", is a general term for music not distributed by commercial record labels. Indie music can belong to any genre.
Many people tend to think indie rock is a style of music when in fact it just means that the band is with an independent (indie) music publisher and not with the bigger labels. Although you tend to find that indie labels will sign more bands/singers from alternative forms of music whereas bigger labels like to sign bands/singers from mainstream. Of course nowadays indie is mainstream. Go figure! Bands like Blur and Oasis have this style of music !!!!
It was easier for an alternative band or performer to sign with an "indie" label than one of the major labels. The independent labels were more willing to take a chance on something different or new. Some bands used their indie success to get major labels interested (like Nirvana), while others stayed true to the small labels that supported them early on. A few performers (like Juliana Hatfield) had concurrent deals with both an indie and a major.
No, they've signed to multiple labels, and are considered alternative rock, or pop punk sometimes.
No, folk is a style (actually a wide range of styles) of music whereas indie refers to the fact that the music is on an independent label -- but many indie labels do feature folk music or folk-rock or folk-pop
Independent (or Indie )labels have less capital to work with than major record labels - usually affecting production quality of albums and the distribution of. Independent labels are usually a stepping stone for an artist before going with a more mainstream label and making the big bucks, especially if it is a more underground type of music.
All kinds from Indie, to Opera, and Jazz.
I listen to a lot of genres but I find myself either listening to Rock, bedroom pop, indie and lofi. Sometimes, I listen to KPOP and rap
A song is indie if it is on a independent label. In actuality this is more complicated than it seems because some indie bands join major labels but are still respected by the indie culture. For example, the band Sonic Youth have been on a major label since the 90's but many people still respect them and call them indie. Indie may also refer to a specific style of music. In that respect indie is an umbrella term meaning that it encompases many sub genres and styles. Usually, trends birth these sub genres and styles. So when someone calls a song indie they may refer to a certain trend in music as well as whether the artist is on a major label or not.
Kristen likes to listen to music like The Beatles.
