Having been trained as a classical singer, I would say because classical musicians - who are not snobs (and there certainly are some of those) - value music that is good, and good music doesn't have to be classical. Many (not all) genre or selective singers feel their favorite music is the ONLY music, like bumper stickers that say "If it isn't country, it isn't music", or the like.
