This extremely difficult exercise ensured that we did not have to worry about the music but only focused on the notes. We did, in a sense, music improvise the piece. The benefit of the exercise was that when you had to sing with the music and then without it, you experienced a sort of muscle memory which made it easier for you to sing with a piece of music.
