Why have one answer when there are two valid reasons: * obviously, failure to chew will lead to a likely probability in choking, if a mouthful of food goes down the wrong way, * the other reason is that, by chewing a large lump of food, you are increasing the surface area for amylase enzymes (in the saliva) to go about breaking down starch more efficiently.

What are cud chewing animals called?

Cud-chewing animals are called ruminants. Ruminants are any hoofed mammal that digests its food in two steps. In the first step, the food is chewed and partially digested in the mouth.
