Stars. Comets in our star system orbit the sun (the only star in our system). Comets that orbit planets are called "moons."

Long period comets come from the Oort cloud which exists outside the orbit of Eris (the furthest dwarf planet I can think of off the top of my head of beyond Pluto). Sometimes objects in the Oort cloud are disturbed out of their regular orbit by collisions or the effects of gravity from other bodies in close proximity. The object's orbit then changes to one which brings it toward the sun. These objects have ice on them called volatiles which begin to evaporate and out gas approximately at the distance of the orbit of Jupiter from the Sun. This is what causes the tail of the comet which can span millions of miles in the solar wind. Some Oort cloud objects settle into a highly elliptical orbit bringing the comet into the inner solar system at a regular intervals (such as Halley's Comet which returns approximately every 75 years). Others will end up on a suicide course thus crashing into the Sun. There are many comets with a wide variety of orbital periods. Some short and some very long.

Short period comets hail from the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune, which includes Pluto and Eris.

Is halleys comet part of the solar system?

Yes. Halley's Comet is a comet that orbits our sun, and the definition of "Part of the solar system" is 'Any object that orbits our sun.'

What is a ball of ice dust and gasses that travels through space and orbits the sun?

a comet/meteorite

What orbit does a comet have?

Orbits move in very elongated elliptical orbits.

What did comet halley do?

Comet Halley is a famous periodic comet that orbits the Sun about every 76 years. It was last seen in 1986 and will next be visible from Earth in 2061. Its discovery and observation contribute to our understanding of comets and their trajectories.

Rock liquid or gas that orbits the sun?

Rock: asteroid. Liquid: none. Gas: comet.

Can you catch a comet?

No. A comet is at least several miles across and orbits the sun and extremely high speeds.

What are the changes that occur as a comet orbits the sun?

it gets a tail

Planet's orbits are nearly circularWhat shape is the comet's?

Comet orbits are typically elliptical, meaning they are elongated and not circular like planet orbits. This can result in comets having highly eccentric paths around the Sun.

What comet orbits the sun every 76 yars?

The only one I know is Halley's Comet. There may be others.

What is a comet made from?

Comet is a small balll from material like dust and ice that travels around the sun or orbits.

Does a comets speed change as it orbits the sun?

Yes. Comets have highly elliptical orbits. They move fastest when they are nearest the sun and slowest when they are farthest away.

Is a comet a moon?

No. A comet orbits a star such as the sun. In order to be a moon it must orbit a planet or some similar body.
