The exceptions are if a storm its bad enough, its name is retired and replaced with one of the same gender and first letter. A name might also not be used every six years, especially if it is later in the alphabet if not enough storms occur to reach that name. This applies to areas under the jurisdiction on the National Hurricane Center. Other agencies have different naming systems.
