Is a black hole a good thing or a bad thing?

At the present time we have no actual use for black holes, they are just an astronomical phenomenon that we observe. If we had a black hole closer at hand, it might prove to be a terrific place to dump garbage.

They seem to very useful actually - by acting as the centre of mass of galaxies so holding them together. As for using them as rubbish-dumps (assuming you could!), don't you think we leave enough litter around anyway?

Well, no one really knows if they exists but if you were caught up in one, yes that would be really bad. Also black holes eat up stars and get bigger so if they did exist then they could suck in everything... So they can be bad in some ways.

Both - Depends on one's proximity to it. A black hole is a good thing as it appears to be the central focus of gravitational attraction that holds galaxies together. Currently, the only organic life we know of is among the planets of solar systems, the only solar systems we know of are within galactic formations, and the only galactic formations appear to be the result of central black hole focus of gravitational attraction. Therefore, without black holes there would be no organic life.

A black hole is a bad thing if you are too close, i.e. within the ergosphere of a black hole or closer. Within this vicinity is where the gravitational attraction of a black hole starts to make life difficult. It is within the ergosphere that we find the accretion disk of the black hole. Matter falling onto a black hole can form an accretion disk heated by friction, forming some of the brightest objects in the universe. These bright objects are indicative of nuclear meltdown due to the stretching and compaction of matter as it nears the event horizon.

Yes. They are neither good nor bad. Nothing in Astronomy is good or bad, it's only the effects om human beings that makes an action good or bad.
