Atoms are made of sub-atomic particles. In total their are 3 sub-atomic particles, protons, neutrons and electrons.

Protons and neutrons make up the nucleus of the atom and are roughly the same mass whilst electrons orbit the nucleus and are found within a range of different shells.

Protons are positively charged, neutrons have no charge whilst electrons are negatively charged. In an atom which is not ionic there are always the same number of electrons as protons.
