Matter is always there, has always been there, and will always be there. Matter does not simply disappear on its own however matter can be destroyed and has been destroyed by being converted to energy, such as the way a reactor works (both in nature and man made), the sun's core converts matter into energy thus destroying the matter, the same way a hydrogen bomb works. As of now we can not create matter scientifically, however matter can be theoretically created throughout the universe near the event horizon of a black hole.
