No, you cannot put but one set of wires in a meter base. The way to go about this, is to mount an outside panel beside your meter base. Panel sized to existing house service, equipped with two main breakers. One to re-feed the house panel the other to feed your shop.

Can you replace a 100 amp panel with a 200 amp panel using the same wires coming from meter?

No the service wires need to be upgrade to 3/0 copper or 250 mcm aluminum. This will require a power company to disconnect so you can upgrade the service. These wires are always hot unless the power company disconnects from their source. Do it right pull a permit and upgradeAdditional information:Some meter base boxes include a shutoff/breaker. If you are only looking for additional space inside the breaker panel, and do not upgrade to a higher amperage breaker inside the meter base, you actually CAN use the same wire, provided that it is long enough to reach into the new breaker panel. The breaker of the meter base protects from the over-current condition. If you have the shutoff in the meter base, you will obviously be able to disconnect service while you perform the necessary changes. While you are working on the service, lock-out the meter base access to prevent anyone from turning the power back on.It is still recommended that you pull a permit and work with a qualified electrician.

How do you disconnect service from an electric meter box?

You do not remove the electric meter from a house. Ever. You could be electrocuted or have an explosion in front of your face, putting molten metal through you. You must call the power company and they will send a properly trained and properly safety-equipped technician to remove the meter from the house. Even the fire department is no longer authorized to "pull a meter". They would rather have your house burn down than risk the life of a firefighter making an attempt to pull the meter, even with firefighting protective equipment. Do not attempt to remove an electric meter from a house.

Electricity is measured where?

Your electrical consumption is measured at the meter that is located on the outside of most residential homes. This meter is located at the bottom of the meter stack at eye level for the meter reader to take the readings. Usually just after the meter base the conduit enters the house and ends at the distribution panel.

Can you install 100 amp service in 200 amp meter base?

No, each size service needs its own meter base.

How long it takes to install a domestic electric meter for a new customer?

In the US, it only takes a couple of minutes for a power company electrician to install an electric meter on a new service. The drop from the power line is made to an electrical connection box in the house, and the box has the meter base built into it. The meter basically "bayonets" into the base, and then is secured. Some kind of a "tamper indicator" is then affixed so that the meter cannot be removed without breaking that indicator. With the panel in place and properly wired and inspected, the power company electrician can have the meter in and buttoned up in just a couple of minutes.

Exterior electrical service wires connected on a house 3 feet from what?

The point of connection will be at the utility meter base, Whether the service is installed from a pole (overhead) or underground. In an overhead installation, the conductors may physically attach to the house at points other than the meter base, but they will always end up at the meter base.

How do you connect an single phase watt meter?

Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz supply service. The wires from the utility connection will be connected to the top terminals jaws of the meter base. The bottom of the meter base terminal jaws will be connected to the top of the first over current device. This will be the service distribution's disconnect switch. The neutral will pass through the meter base with no grounding connection and continue on to the distribution's neutral terminal point.

What is the difference between single phase and three phase voltage measurement?

Phasing, or the number of phases in an electrical system has nothing to do with the voltage. A single phase and three phase supply could have a voltage supply of any given voltage from virtually 0 to infinity. Most single phase power supplies in the US are 120/208-240 volt. Three phase power supplies are typically 120/208 to 277/480 volt.

How do you plug in a kwh meter?

The meter is plugged into the meter base that has already been pre-wired. After the contractor has wired the meter stack and called for an inspection, the paper work is passed on to the utility company. They have a special employee that will bring the meter out to the site and install it. This is just a matter of pushing the meter into the socket of the meter base. With the meter in the correct up right position, a connecting the ring that secures the meter to the base is installed. On the adjustment screw of the retaining ring there is a screw with a hole in it. It is through this screw that the the utility company's tamper proof seal is inserted and locked.
