Water can be a solute under some circumstances. For example, if 1cm3 of water is added to 100cm3 of ethanol, an ethanolic solution is formed in which ethanol is the solvent and water is the solute!!!

note: a solute is that which is less in quantity and solvent is which is more in quantity
