A chemical change results in the formation of new substances eg hydrogen explodes in the presence of oxygen when lit to form water. The water is not the same as hydrogen and oxygen and there was also a change in energy.

A physical change does not change the nature of the substance eg freezing water means one still has water, cutting wood into sawdust, dissolving salt into water.
