The principal North American air masses include Continental Polar (cP), Maritime Polar (mP), Continental Tropical (cT), and Maritime Tropical (mT). Continental Tropical air masses originate from the southwestern United States and are characterized by hot, dry conditions, while Maritime Tropical air masses, coming from the Gulf of Mexico, are warm and humid.
