The tsunami of Sumatra happened on December 14, 2004.
The first place hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was the western coast of Northern Sumatra in Indonesia. The tsunami struck on the morning of December 26, 2004, causing widespread devastation and loss of life in countries around the Indian Ocean rim.
Indonesia was the first country to be hit by the tsunami. It took place off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The epicentre for this was off the west coast of Sumatra. The other countries that were hit by this were: India (western coast), Burma, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Andobar and Nicobar Islands, Thailand, Maldives, Seychelles, Malaysia and countries on the Eastern coast of East Africa - patricularly Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania.
When the ocean bottom slipped, the tsunami went out from the epicenter in all directions. If there had been an island 30 meters high (100 feet) near the epicenter, the tsunami would have covered it. As it was the tsunami spread out as it went. Land close to the epicenter such as Ceylon, Thailand, and Western Indonesia, got hit the worst. When it got to Africa, the tsunami was about a meter high (3 feet). It was in between in the areas in between. Still, It went all the way from Indonesia to Africa because the earth moved so much.

A large undersea earthquake near the island of Sumatra in Indonesia raised a huge section of the ocean floor, generating a tsunami in all directions. Most devastated were the nearby coastal areas of Sumatra, especially around Aceh province at the extreme northwest end of the island. But the series of tsunamis extended for thousands of miles, causing destruction in Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India, and as far away as Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula and Kenya and Tanzania in Africa.
no. not at all
my bum
an earthquake occurred with the epicenter in Sumatra Indonesia with a magnitude of 9.1 to 9.3. (they are not sure about the exact figure). because of the very strong earthquake, it caused tsunamis in the Indian Ocean. The earthquake and resulting tsunami affected many countries in Southeast Asia and beyond, including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, the Maldives, Somalia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Seychelles and others. Many other countries, especially Australia and those in Europe, had large numbers of citizens traveling in the region on holiday. Both Sweden and Germany lost over 500 citizens each in the disaster.
