You can't live in a volcano. If you're meaning close to it, people lived just like the industrial revolution, only that it changed at August 27 1883.

Volcanic slopes are rich and fertile. Many people lived on the slopes of volcanoes because that is where they could best grow crops. Occasional rumblings from a volcano were considered a small price to pay for the benefits of having bigger and healthier vegetables and crops.
