Inches are bigger. I think an inch was the width of a man's thumb, hence "pouce" in French.

A centimetre is 1/100 of a meter. Imperial measures (yards, inches, pounds etc.) used to be defined as things like the distance from the King's nose to his thumb. After the French Revolution, the French decided to replace all that with "scientific" measurements, like the distance between two scratches on a metal bar. Nowadays it's all in terms of wavelengths of light from certain atoms, and an inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm.

1 in. = 2.54 cm

1 cm = 0.3937 in.
