I had a Chichuahua that got pet anxiety or separation anxiety about five years ago. He was ok for a year and a half and house broken well. When they get this they get spiteful and use the house. We both worked long hours and my husband at the time worked shifts. When he was gone, I was at home, but the puppy did stay quite a few hours alone while we worked, no more than usual. Kept in the wash room with a child gate. Plenty of water and food and safe toys. The vet said they don't understand it. I explained to him that if I got in from work late, I often stayed up until two o'clock in the morning and went in late since I owned my business. This was so the chihuahua would have plenty of time with me. The vet said if I was the one he choose to be the most attached to he was missing me. He acted like he loved us both the same. He said some dogs get it and it is not something that is fully understood and unless I could quit work and stay with him, it was likely not to stop. The 6 months of wetting in the house after being taken out ever 15 minutes, didn't stop. He screamed at night for 6 months. The vet could find nothing wrong with him. Couldn't let him sleep in the bed with us, because he would get down and wet the floor. Vet said once they start the separation anxiety the only way to stop it is to quit work and stay at home with them. You can't sell a business for a pet. I had him adopted out to a family with children and two dogs. He also got mean. He bit the baby but they kept him. He was not mean to us. He was sweet and this broke my heart. My husband even cried. We loved him so. He was two years old. My friend has a poodle that has this and she is on Prozac but five years ago they didn't give them the Prozac. So now they are saying it is a mental thing. Different vets have different opinions. Didn't get a puppy for five years after this. Just couldn't. We early retired and now we have a tiny chihuahua and she is doing great and a sweetheart. I just wouldn't get another one until I had more time to spend with one. They are very loving little dogs and need your attention alot. We gave the first one sooooo much attention, but now I am getting this one used to staying in a crate for naps twice a day and not just holding her all the time like I did him. Dogs have different personalities just like people.
