All the colours of the rainbow have different wavelengths. For example, violet has short wavelengths, while red has long wavelengths. Visible light appears as white light because it is a mixture of all the colours. Also, chlorophyll is the principal pigment involved in photosynthesis. Chlorophyll absorbs all the different coloured wavelengths, but leaves green as the colour it reflects and as the colour we see.

Therefore, white light is best to grow plants under because green light doesn't do much of anything for photosynthesis.

How would green plants grow in green light?

Generally, plants do not grow well in green light as the green portion of white light is reflected (this is why plants appear green), if a plant was subject to only green light it wouldn't take in as much light energy because it would be reflected, therefore, photosynthesis would not be carried out as efficiently as a plant subjected to white light.

What is the Name for turning green plants white by lack of light?

The term for turning green plants white due to a lack of light is "etiolation." This process occurs when plants are grown in darkness, causing them to become pale and elongated as they reach for light.

What color of light would probably be the least helpful for this plant's growth?

White light would be universal, but if you had to choose a color, and the color of the plant is green, then green light would not help it photosynthesize the easiest, because green light is reflected from these plants. Just like red light would be reflected from red plants, it probably wouldn't be the best to use

What wavelength of visible light is least utilized by chlorophyll?

White absorbs the least light. The "pigment" that causes the color white does not absorb any other colors, so all the colors are reflected back to you as "everything", or white. Think of white light. There are many colors hidden in white light, and by the process of refraction, white light can be separated and a rainbow of colors revealed. Black, on the other hand, is a pigment that absorbs all colors of light. Since no color is present, what you see is essentially a reflection of "nothing".

What color doesn't chlorophyll absorb?

The color of anything is either the color of the light that is reflected from it, or the light that is transmitted through it. The other colors in white light are absorbed. So, since we see leaves as green whether in reflected light or when light shines through them, green is the color which is NOT absorbed.

Which component of white light is not necessary for photosynthesis?

Green light is not as efficiently absorbed by plants for photosynthesis compared to other colors. Therefore, plants can perform photosynthesis without relying heavily on green light.

You get light green.

Why is the green wavelength of light little use in photosynthesis?

Chlorophyll, the molecule in plant cells that traps sunlight energy which is used to power the photosynthetic assembly of sugars, is green in colour. Any molecule that appears green in colour when illuminated by white light (sunlight), is absorbing all the colours (spectrum) which make up white light EXCEPT the green part of the light spectrum, which it is reflected (so that the green light comes back to our eyes).

What coloured light makes white light when mixed with green light?

Magenta coloured light makes white light when mixed with green light

What affect do different color of light have on the growth of plants?

The plants only absorb green light from the white light of sun. It doesn't mean that you are going to put a green color transparent plastic sheet in front of light and plant gonna grow more but it requires the source to produce the green light like Sodium produce yellow light used in fog lamps.

Why chlorophyll is green in colour although it absorbs in blue and red region?

Light is white. White is a neutral color that is an equal mix of all the primary colors. Plants are green because they have green chlorophyll. The reason why chlorophyll is green is because when white light emitted by the sun hits a green plant the chlorophyll absorbs the red and blue light but doesn't absorb the green light so the green light bounces off the plant and goes into our eyes making the "plant look green". It is rather more complex to why the chlorophyll doesn't absorb green light and only absorbs red and blue light.
