In many places in the universe - commonly caused by the death of older stars - are huge clouds of gas and dust. The most common gas - and the most common element by far in the known universe - is hydrogen. The atoms in the clouds of gas are gravitationally attracted to each other. As a core, or nucleus, forms of hydrogen atoms squeezed a little buy the clouds of hydrogen around it, the increased gravitational strength of the core draws more hydrogen to it - and progressively faster. Soon the pressure on the core of the gas ball is enormous, and the heat generated by the ever increasing pressure actually makes the hydrogen atoms start binding together as helium atoms - nuclear fusion. Enormous quantities of heat, and light, are created. This heat begins to work it's way outward from the center, while meanwhile more hydrogen continues to pile on from outside. When the pressure and energy generated at the core is equal to the pressure of the hydrogen pressing down on the core, a state called "hydrostatic equilibrium" is reached. A perfect sphere has been formed, which glows brightly from it's own self generated nuclear fusion. And - if you'll excuse the expression - "a star is born".

Stars are powered by nuclear fusion. At its most basic level, a star takes its hydrogen fuel and fuses it to create helium. The fusion process gives off energy, which we see in the form of sunlight. In certain stars (such as heavier stars) elements heavier than helium can form, usually through chain reactions in which progressively heavier elements form - namely, neutron capture, proton capture, and photo-disintegration are the processes that create heavy elements. It takes millions of years for free floating diatomic molecules of hydrogen gas in space to congregate in sufficient quantity to produce a protostar (the first stage). The collapse of the gas usually requires some event, such as a collision between gaseous nebula which tend to be inelastic, or the shockwave from a supernova, or the wake of a black hole. Any of these events can nudge gravity to coalesce the gas into a "brown dwarf."

When a brown dwarf has gained enough mass to emit its own light and heat via gravitational collapse, it becomes known as a "protostar." Protostars require 100,000 to a few million years to gain sufficient mass, core heat and pressure, to commence nuclear fusion, even though they can appear as bright as a "true" star. The most common true star is known as a T-Tauri star.

Nuclear fusion occurs as protons of hydrogen combine with neutrons to form helium nuclei (alpha particles). This process takes place in the core of the star, where the temperature is in the millions of degrees and the pressure is extremely high. Nuclear ignition is the point at which one may say a star is "born," and the resulting solar wind slows or halts the infalling nebular gas. Any remaining gas the star pulls into itself would come primarily from what is known as a protoplanetary accretion disk, usually forming parallel to the star's rotational axis.

Helium comes from the word helios, meaning "sun." The helium nucleus is lighter than its constituent parts--the two protons and neutrons of which it is formed. This difference is known as the "mass defect," and is equivalent to the energy liberated in the fusion process. So in its gestational state a protostar shines via gravitational collapse, until the core pressure and temperature is great enough for nuclear fusion, at which point the star shines by the nuclear fusion reaction.

Larger stars are less common, but can form in less time, such as by the collision of numerous protostars.

Stars are being made all the time. On average one new star is "born" every year in our Milky Way Galaxy.

Chronologically, the first stars were "born" about 400 million years after the big bang (About 13.6 billion years ago). These stars, known as population III stars, were massive and thus has a very short life span. They would have exploded as giant supernova, but in doing so, they "seeded" the Universe with the first heavy elements, that would eventually be required for life.
