Before modern plastics man used many natural polymers for similar purposes to those which we use modern plastics for today. A few are:

- rubber, sap of the rubber tree
- amber, transparent fossilized pine tree sap
- tar, a product of destructive distillation of wood, coal, etc.
- asphalt, present in petroleum, first found in natural oil seeps
- shellac, a resin produced by certain insects
- etc.
