Well, technically anything you do to injure the tree will hurt it, but over the long haul of the trees life, the fact that one nail is hammered into its bark should not endanger the tree. It has more important things that will hurt it -- like lack of water, sunlight etc. I have cut down many large trees (I worked for Asplundh) and found nails way inside the tree that were hammered in there 50 or 60 years ago and the tree stayed healthy and strong.
Line trimming around your tree will not hurt it as long as you do not girdle the tree, which is when you tear off the bark all the way around by getting too close.Any damage to the bark will harm the tree, but it will not die unless you go all the way around, it will take time but the tree will recover.using the trimmer on the tree itself would be silly, that's why I did not address it even though you were not clear in the question.

No. Bark is part of the tree, not an independent organism.
The outermost layer of a tree is called the bark. It protects the inner layers of the tree from external elements such as insects, diseases, and harsh weather conditions. Bark can vary in texture and appearance depending on the tree species.
Tree bark is made up of multiple layers of cells, including cork cells on the outside and phloem and xylem cells underneath. So, in a way, tree bark is composed of millions of cells working together to protect and support the tree.
Actually no you can't. But you may hurt it----------------------------------------------------If you do so long enough, hard enough and systematically so that you destory all the bark - all the way round the trunk, then yes you can kill a tree this way.
No, the word 'bark' is a verb or a noun. When the noun 'bark' is used to describe another noun (a bark collar for a dog or a bark frame for a photo), it's functioning as an attributive noun (also called a noun adjunct).
