Bacteria do not breathe as such. Breathing is something that lungs do and since bacteria do not have lungs, they do not breathe. However the purpose of lungs is to absorb oxygen into the bloodstream. The oxygen taken in by the lungs is used during cellular respiration to create energy and gives off carbon dioxide and water as by-products. Bacteria do respire, it is how they get their energy. Not all use oxygen and glucose, other chemicals that can be used are chlorine or methane.

Bacteria don't "breathe." I guess that the closest thing to breathing would be taking in nutrients, which they do through phagocytosis (a cell taking in a solid), pinocytosis (a cell taking in a liquid) or diffusion (of either dissolved substances or liquids).
they breathe chlorine
