At 13679ft in altitude, Mauna Loa is sufficiently high to receive regular winter snowfall even in the tropics. It is also believed that the summit of Mauna Loa was glaciated like the summit of Mauna Kea during the last ice age. However, unlike Mauna kea, any evidence of former glaciation has since been covered by lavas erupted since the last ice age.
