The 'tilt' of the Earth's axis doesn't change. The axis always makes an angle of about

661/2 degrees with the plane of the Earth's orbit, and the north pole is always pointed

toward the same spot in the sky, near the star Polaris.

But as we ride around the sun in the course of a year, since the axis always points

toward the same place, that means that the north pole is tilted toward the sun during

half of the trip, and away from the sun during the other half. And there are two

moments during the year when the axis is neither toward nor away from the sun ...

those are always around March 21 and September 22.

If you're on the half of Earth that's tilted toward the sun, then you have Spring and

Summer. And if you're on the half of Earth that's tilted away from the sun, then you

have Fall and Winter. (It has nothing to do with being closer or farther from the sun.

It's all on account of the tilt.)
