If you drop sodium metal into water, two reactions happen:

then 2H2 + O2 -> 2H2O

The second reaction causes the huge explosion that makes this either an "exciting" experiment (if you drop the sodium into water from thirty or forty feet up) or a dangerous one (if you do it in the classroom).
