The Kola Superdeep Borehole project (in the USSR) attempted to drill as deep as possible into the Earth's crust. Drilling began on 24 May 1970 and the deepest hole, SG-3, reached 12,261 metres (40,230 ft) in 1989. Earlier, in 1961, an attempt was made to reach the Mohorovicic Discontinuity, the boundary between the earth's crust and mantle, by drilling through the oceanic crust. The US, through the National Science Foundation, sponsored Project Moho, which drilled 601 feet into the crust, beginning 11,700 feet below the ocean surface.

How is earths crust able to stay balanced on the mantle?

The Earth's crust remains balanced on the mantle due to isostasy, a principle that describes how the crust floats on the denser, semi-fluid mantle beneath it. Variations in crustal thickness and density create buoyancy forces that ensure equilibrium. When tectonic forces cause changes in the crust, such as mountain building or erosion, the crust adjusts its elevation to maintain this balance. This dynamic equilibrium allows the crust to remain stable despite ongoing geological processes.

Which layer of the earths layer is the coolest?

The coolest layer of the Earth is the lithosphere, which is the rigid outermost layer consisting of the crust and upper mantle. This layer's temperature decreases with depth, making it the coolest part of the Earth's structure.

What if us as people from earth decided to mine iron and nickel from the earths core?

1. we would never be able to get down to the bottom to the core because we dont have the machineary and if we got past the earths crust hot molten lava would pour out and destroy the country. 2. if we mined the earths core it would be so hot no thing could survive it and we couldn't mine it because it is extremely hard

Why is there so much more metals at the core then in the Earths crust?

Metal is more dense than rock. Early in the history of the Earth, the whole planet was very hot and everything was liquid, and the heavier liquid components of the planet were able to sink through the lighter liquids which floated to the top. We think of rock such as granite as being very dense, but everything is relative. Granite is less dense than iron, and it floats on top.

Why is there oxygen in the Earths Crust?

Oxygen, though usually a gas, is still in a molecule form and can be bonded to with any other molecule that is able to do so. Oxygen is a very common element in the crust because many rocks and more importantly minerals that make up those rocks use it in there atomic bonds. A simple example is Quartz, SiO2 So each single structure has one silicon atom and two oxygen atoms.

Can microwave rays get through the earths atmosphere?

Microwave rays can pass through the Earth's atmosphere, as they are a form of electromagnetic radiation that is not absorbed or blocked by gases in the atmosphere. This is why microwave communication systems like satellites are able to transmit signals through the atmosphere.

Why is the crust able to float and move on top of the mantle?

it is floating on it
