They didn't. Most people's lives remain unaffected by anything beyond geosynchronous orbit. (Geosynch is the altitude of communications satellites.) Even for those of us who are fascinated by astronomy and space travel, information about distant galaxies is unlikely to affect us personally in any significant way.
But knowledge often turns out to be practical and useful in unusual, often in unimagined ways.
Comment: That's true up to a point, but I think there has been an important
psychological effect. The proven size of the Universe became much
larger and this has deeply affected how humans feel about their
significance in the Universe. OK, a lot of people don't think about
it, but if you do it's truly staggering.

The astronomer Edwin Hubble provided evidence in the 1920s that other galaxies existed beyond our own Milky Way. By observing Cepheid variable stars in the Andromeda Galaxy, he demonstrated that it was a separate galaxy located far outside our own. This discovery revolutionized our understanding of the universe's scale and confirmed the existence of other galaxies.
Mister Edwin Hubble did just that, before the 1920's, many astronomers thought that our galaxy included everyobject in space, in 1924 Edwin Hubble proved that other galaxies existed beyond the milky way
The Hubble Space Telescope was named after the American astronomer Edwin Hubble, who played a crucial role in changing our understanding of the universe by demonstrating that galaxies are moving away from each other.
In 1962, astronomer Edwin Hubble decided to classify galaxies according to a logical scheme. he eventually decided to classify them according to their shape. Today, galaxies are divided into four main groups: spiral, barred spiral, elliptical, and irregular.
In the late 1920s, the astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered that most of the galaxies he observed were moving away from Earth.

BELLY!
Edwin Hubble noticed that galaxies are moving away from us in all directions. This observation led to the conclusion that the universe is expanding, which is now known as Hubble's Law.
Edwin Hubble was an astronomer. He proved that there are a lot of other galaxies out there. He proved that those galaxies are moving away from us and the universe is expanding.

The Hubble Telescope is named after astronomer Edwin Hubble, who made significant contributions to the field of observational cosmology. Edwin Hubble's discoveries revolutionized our understanding of the universe, which is why the telescope was named in his honor.
Edwin Hubble was famous for measuring the red shift of distant galaxies and interpreting that as evidence of the expansion of the Universe.
