Mark 1 version - side-lamps (and headlight bulbs) can be replaced following the directions in the handbook, but it's all done by touch and feel since you can't see a thing. It helps if your hands and fingers are not too large, and you might be bent over the front of the car for a while especially if the bulb retaining clip decides to spring off from its fitting. after replacing one bulb I took it to local independent repair shop who did it in 5 minutes for a fiver.

The voltage present on the secondary side of the ballast (transformer) varies as to the type of fluorescent tube or bulb that is in the fixture. The heat from the filament radiates in all directions inside the bulb (as there is no air for convection). Once the heat reaches the glass the heat is now transmitted by both radiation and convection.Hot air rises so the air on the side of the bulb is heated and it rises up, it is now replaced by cooler air which needs to be heated. So the air on the side of the bulb is colder than the air on top. If you hand is on top of the bulb it will be heated by the air raising from the side as well as the top.
