Seeds are distributed in several ways. They are blown about by the wind, think dandelions. They are moved by water. This could be coconuts. They are ingested by animals to be deposited some where else in feces, think birds. A lot of trees get started this way. Look at all of the weeds that grow around trees! They also get stuck in the fur of animals and end up somewhere else. Think of those annoying burs that get stuck in your socks and stickers that you step on. There are probably other ways, but these are the ones I know of.

Most of these ways of spreading seeds you can think of via examples.

1) Gravity! Newton had it right when he thought of gravity via a falling apple. Seeds often fall to the ground along with a pod or fruit. As the saying goes the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, so the distance away from the parent plant is limited by branch spread, ground slope, dirt erosion and fruiting (think rolling apple) that reduce friction.

2) Flight! Some plants by pass friction all together and let their seeds take to the air. The swirling blade of a maple seed, the drifting lace of the dandelion (dent de lion - tooth of the lion); yet other just send there seeds on a missile blast like the mimosa pod upon touch. This is a good place to add that not only to seeds travel through the air, but pollen also can be carried around the world spreading DNA information long distances from the parent plant. The distance seeds and pollen can travel is influenced by climate, wind patterns, weight and shape.

3) Sailing away! Some seeds are moved by water. Dropping in streams drifting miles away, even as far as the ocean. Certain plants like the coconut have the ability to survive a salty voyage and therefore are some of the first the found on tropical storm damaged islands. 4) Hitching a ride! What did Tom bring to that Island in his pocket or in his digestive track that could have reseeded there? They also can contribute to the spread of invasive weeds and plant; one example being English ivy. Velcro way invented based upon the observation of a barbed see catching a ride on a dogs fur. (Burdock, forget me not) Certainly humans for years have saved, traded and planted seeds...even out into space. One of the oldest living plants from the early Jurassic age, the gingko trees is here because it was saved and distributed around the earth from one area in China.

5) More tricks! So you can see there are more than three ways....gravity, wind, water, and mechanical rides on animals or vehicles (ever seen the signs to wash milfoil off boats?). Since there are more expanded answers in mixed method the list could be much longer. Consider situations like fires which cause pine cones to burst open and then get carried away on firefighter boots (some plants with extreme heat have seed bombs that throw seeds), extreme events like the 1980 Mt Saint Helen's volcano with mud lahars that carry whole forests miles away, or Japan's 2011 tsunami that has debris washing up on the shores of distant countries. They all could be classified in the above categories, but the timeline and distances can be dramatically more. Then we have to consider one last idea while considering timelines in distribution. Just as extreme events can speed up the scale there maybe another scale so slow that we don't even think to see it. P.S. lean closer as I whisper this concept - plants move. Which is not to say they put on a backpack and march, rather roots of trees will grow towards richer soil, the next generation a little bit further that direction. Plants have the ability to chemically communicate with each other and influence the distribution of seed within a grove. So over the 270 million years the gingko has been around the cumulative drift of grow and plant signally had a profound effect not only on the survival of this tree, but also on seed spread. So as a time scale answer seeds may be spread very rapidly or extremely slowly. Now go out and plant something green! Gotta love plants.
