What is splitting into layers?

Splitting into layers refers to dividing something into distinct sections or levels. What can break a diamond without a diamond?

A laser can burn through a diamond and be used to "cut" it, though it might not be pretty. As for jewelry applications, the traditional method of splitting a diamond is to "cut" it with a hardened steel knife. The knife is finely sharpened and hardened, and placed against the diamond to be cut. The knife is then struck with a small hammer. Thus the action is one of splitting, not really cutting. The cut is carefully positioned as to take advantage of the internal crystal structure of the diamond. A hammer can be used to "smash" a diamond and break it, but this is a poor use for a hammer as well as a waste of a diamond.

Why does the degradation of palmitic acid to eight molecules of acetyl-CoA require seven rather than eight rounds of the β-oxidation process?

Think of the palmitic acid as a snickers bar. If your splitting the candy bar among eight friends you only have to cut the candy bar seven times. The concept is the same for spliting the long palmitic acid into eight acetyl-CoA's, you only have to cut it seven times in order to end with eight pieces.

Why do you think you can grow new skin over a cut on your hand but you cant grow new fingers?

When you get a cut on your hand, the skin cells around the wound can regenerate and multiply to cover the area and heal the cut. However, the complex structures and tissues that make up a finger, such as bones, nerves, and blood vessels, are more specialized and cannot regenerate in the same way as simple skin cells. Therefore, fingers cannot grow back like skin does over a cut.
