How bee wax is formed?

Beeswax is produced by glands on the underside of a bee's abdomen. The glands produce liquid wax which sets into little flakes of solid wax about the size of a pinhead on contact with the air.
The composition of beeswax is complex and contains in the order of 300 components including hydrocarbons, straight-chain monohydric alcohols, acids, hydroxy acids, and oils. Its composition can vary according to the variety of bee, the time of year, the weather, and a number of other factors.

Beeswax is produced by young worker bees, between 12 and 17 days old. They have wax glands on the underside of their abdomen and wax is secreted in the form of thin scales.

The wax is initially colourless, but becomes opaque white when the worker bees chew it. Newly made honeycomb is almost white, but slowly becomes yellow or even brown as it absorbs pollen oils and propolis.

When a honey bee visits a flower it drinks the nectar which then goes into the honey stomach, which comes before the main digestive tract, and no actual digestion takes place in it. A small amount of enzyme is added to the nectar by the bee.

When the bee returns to the hive, it will regurgitate the nectar and pass it to one of the bees in the hive who will also take it down into her honey stomach. It may be passed from bee to bee several times, and each time a little more enzyme is added. Eventually the last bee will put the nectar into one of the honeycomb cells.

The enzyme that the bees added is important. Nectar is a mixture of various sugars, the exact proportion of which varies from one species of plant to another and often at different times of year. Some of these sugars are quite complex. The enzyme breaks these sugars down mainly into glucose and fructose.

The nectar placed in the cell is about 80 per cent water and if left like this would ferment so the bees maintain a flow of air through the hive and fan the nectar with their wings to drive off surplus water. When the bees deem it ready they seal off the cell with a cap of wax. At this point the honey will be about 18 per cent water, the remainder sugars with traces of vitamins and some minerals.
