Global warming is more accurately called global climate change. The popular press has it as a process that makes everything warmer. In reality the Earth's temperature affects diverse systems such as wind and ocean currents and the amount of moisture in the air. These impacts can make some areas hotter, some colder some drier and some wetter (or snowier). They can make storms more intense or change weather patterns (storms happen where they didn't occur before).

How can global warming cause colder winters?

Global Warming may or may not cause colder winters. Global warming refers to a climate change whereas colder winters are yearly weather patterns. On average the Climate and the World is warming up. It is a fact that the average temperatures are hotter than twenty or even ten years ago. So, whether you blame it on humans or natural cycles, global warming is happening. However, the colder winters we have had the past few years are possibly imperfections in global warming and may end soon. Also, some places are affected differently at different times. For example, the East had record snowfall this past winter, but other places had record heat this past winter. So yearly weather patterns can sometimes cause colder winters.

Why do people claim there is such a thing as global warming when each winter gets harsher and harsher than the one before?

Global warming creates more moisture in the atmosphere, which in turn, leads to more snow. It also can create weather extremes of both hot and cold. Just because we have a few cold days doesn't mean that global warming doesn't exist. The entire climate is changing including weather patterns, and sea currents are also being affected, which can cause catastrophic climate change. If the gulf stream were to cease to flow, northern Europe and the northeastern seaboard of the US would experience much colder winters. In quite simple terms, global warming changes everything, including winters, and can cool places as well as warm them. It does not mean it will be 100 degrees every day on every location on the planet, but it does mean that we can experience far more severe weather at any location, at any time.
