the land around it changes

Lava renew nutrients to the soil. After eruptions & the destruction they bring, nature can grow back more quickly each time. It's part of the reason people may not know the mountain is an active or dormant volcano. How could land so fertile & beautiful be so dangerous to live in or near. They can be so active that they turn land into toxic wastelands like in Lord Of The Rings- Mount Doom. Some volcanoes are powerful enough that they can have global repercussions. When a volcano erupts, it launches ash/pumice/gases/etc high into the atmosphere where the ash/pumice/etc eventually rain back down on nearby cities/towns/etc. Ash can blind you, create a cement-like liquid in your lungs when it mixes with the moisture.15 centimeters of ash when mixed with rain can collapse a roof and 30 cm can collapse a roof. Just 1cm or mm can affect electronics/airplanes, cars, etc/etc can destroy & wear out engines. Volcanoes powerful enough to affect the world happens because the gases/ash(if it's still up there)/etc blocks out part of the sunlight & drops the temperature very low. Enough that you have a year to a couple or more years of volcanic winter. A super volcanic eruption can cause a large part of the land near the super volcano is made unusable possibly because of dozens of feet worth of ash & maybe because of other reasons(they didn't explain what they were or why).
