How can you save the ozone layer for kids?

The ozone hole is an area where ozone concentrations are lower than normal. It occurs because of various factors: # If there is little UV light to make new ozone -- when winter comes to the poles where the ozone holes form, the ozone decays with time if for no other reason. We can't do much about this. # If there is little oxygen to make ozone. # If there are compounds (many inadvertantly produced by humans) that consume and deplete oxygen and/or ozone. # If there are compounds that catalytically convert ozone back to oxygen. We can't 'fix' the hole per se, but we can do things to PREVENT it from getting bigger. Note that there is a 10-20 year "delay" between CFC emissions and ozone depletion -- we are experiencing the effects of CFC emissions from the '70s and early '80s. The laws/regulations that have been passed are to compensate and prepare for future increases in ozone depletion due to our past, present, and future actions concerning pollution and CFC emissions. Actions an indivdual can take (see the link below for more): * Try to use products which are labeled "Ozone-Friendly" * Ensure technicians repairing your refrigerator or air conditioner recover and recycle the old CFCs so they are not released into the atmosphere. * Vehicle air conditioning units should regularly be checked for leaks. * Ask about converting your car to a substitute refrigerant if the a/c system needs major repair * Help start a refrigerant recovery and recycling program in your area if none already exists. * Replace halon fire extinguishers with alternatives (e.g. carbon dioxide or foam). * Suggest school activities to increase awareness of the problem and to initiate local action.

2. If your a/c in your car is leaking take it to a repair shop quickly or CFC will go in the air and that is bad because CFC hurts our ozone layer.

3. Plus you shouldn't use aerosol cans.

4. You should tell your school about earth's ozone layer so people will help us save the ozone layer.

5. Buy refrigerators with lower watts.

6. Stop using CFC's. CFC means "Chlorofluorocarbon". CFC's are a type of chemical that is used in spray cans to make them spray and in refrigerators to make stuff cold.
