Unless a chemical reaction happens, you can usally seperate things by boiling, filtering, or usign a centrifuge. (Sorry, don't know how to translate that). Or, sometimes mixed substances will spontanteously seperate in case a fluid is involved.

It really depends on what kind of substances you're talking about.
