Cold water can sap the heat from a human fairly quickly, even if it is fairly warm. Water that is below the normal body temperature will eventually cause a person to die of hypothermia. How far below that temperature will determine how long it takes for this to happen. While warm water may take many hours, even days, very cold water such as the North Atlantic would be measured in minutes.
