Simple. Earthquakes shake the part of the earth right? So if it is bad enough, buildings and poles and other things fallover and kill people. Like in haiti, most of the buildings fell over and trapped people without food or water. Some of those fallen buildings fell straight on top of some people and killed them automaticly.
