Hurricane Sandy formed from a tropical disturbance over the Caribbean that organized and intensified as it was fueled by moisture that evaporated from the warm water. This is how nearly all hurricanes develop. Sandy traveled northward and began to transition into an extratropical cyclone as it entered a colder environment. Partially through interaction with another system, Sandy grew to an enormous size. Finally, a high pressure system centered over Greenland forced Sandy to make an unprecedented turn west, directly into the U.S. east coast.
