How did hurricane Isaac get its name?

Every year there is an assigned list of names for the tropical storms sorted in alphabetical order. Each time a new tropical storm forms it gets the next name on the list. The storm we call Isaac was the 9th tropical storm of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season and so it was given the 9th name on the list: Isaac.

Hurricane Isaac was named by the National Hurricane Center. The names for hurricanes are predetermined and chosen from a rotating list selected by the World Meteorological Organization. Hurricane names are reused every six years unless a storm is particularly deadly or costly, in which case the name is retired.
