They didn't help him and at the very least he was vaguely related to the family. King Ferdinand of Spain in 1508 made him chief navigator of Spain and gave him a huge salary and commissioned him to found a school of navigation. In 1479 he was sent by the Medici to be their spokesman to the king of France. On returning from France he entered the bank of Lorenzo. At the end of 1491 their agent Giannotto Berardi seems to have been somewhat involved in fitting out ships and it was possible that Vespucci was there when Columbus returned from his 1492 voyage. Later, Vespucci collaborated with Berardi to prep the ship for Columbus second voyage. When Berardi died in 1496 Vespucci became the manger of the Sevilla agency. His voyages took place from 1497 to1504. The voyage completed between 1499 and 1500 he was navigator of an expedition of four ships sent from Spain under the command of Alonso de Ojeda. After this voyage Vespucci was sponsored by the Portuguese that left Lisbon on May 13, 1501. He reached the coast of Brazil and returned to Lisbon on July 22, 1502.
