How did the people freeze when Mt Vesuvius erupted?

The people of Pompei were buried in a volcanic eruption - a pyroclastic flow - which burned them up from inside almost instantaneously and embedded their bodies in volcanic ash at the same moment.

The organic tissues decayed inside the ash, leaving a body-shaped hollow inside (rather like the mould in lostwax casting).

When the city was excavated, some of these hollows were filled with plaster before excavation, so that the shape of the engulfed body could be preserved after the hardened volcanic magma had been removed.

When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the extreme heat from the pyroclastic flow caused bodies to rapidly dehydrate and desiccate. As a result, people were preserved in the position that they were in when they died, creating the impression of being frozen in time. Over time, their bodies were covered in ash and solidified, leading to the famous plaster casts found at the archaeological site of Pompeii.

they were not frozen. the lava that came down from mnt. Vesuvius covered their bodies and preserved them. I don't know what you'll find inside if you "break" the lava mold.
