Some medical techniques predate written records. Brain surgery was practiced in ancient France 14,000 years ago. The Ancient Egyptians had an excellent understanding of human anatomy. The types of anatomy books we now have can be traced back to the Arabs of Medieval Spain.

The earliest written information is from early in the 3rd century BC of two surgeons in Alexandria, Herophilus and Erasistratus, who make the first scientific studies designed to discover the workings of human anatomy. They acquired much of their information from human vivisection, the patients being convicted criminals. The criminal were alive.
