Most likely an earthquake out at sea. The force from the quake creates giant waves (tsunami) which can be up to 60 feet high!
The reason an earthquake is suspected is because the land had a quake, so one most happened along a nearby fault line in the sea too.
Tsunsmis have happened through out the history of the planet, so where and when the first one is not known. Discovery of ancient sites has shown that they did happen and have damaged areas, cities, and coastlines, but no written history exists for the ones that took place so long ago that man doesn't remember them.
The 2011 tsunami in Japan primarily impacted the eastern coast of the country, especially the regions of Tohoku and Fukushima. The tsunami was triggered by a powerful undersea earthquake off the coast of Sendai, causing widespread devastation along the coastline.
The most recent tsunami generated by the 2010 Santiago Earthquake affected all major coastlines of the Hawaiian Islands, but were only 2 ft for Hilo Bay, 3 ft for Kahului, and 0.8 ft for Honolulu.
The Japan tsunami, also known as the Great East Japan Earthquake, occurred on March 11, 2011. It was triggered by a massive undersea earthquake off the northeastern coast of Japan, which led to devastating tsunami waves hitting the coastal areas.
One tsunami would be the 2004 Indian ocean tsunami.

There was a really big earthquake in the sea off Japan . About 9 on the Richter scale. This then caused the tidal wave.

The effect we now call tsunami has been happening since there have been oceans on the planet Earth (billions of years). There was no "First Tsunami"; the Japanese have been calling the effect 'tsunami' for many centuries.
