Let's look at what the remote does and then it may become apparent how it works. The remote does several things to accomplish it mission. There isn't a ton of difference between an infrared remote control (IR RC) and one that uses a radio frequency (RF) signal. Push a button and see what happens. The batteries power up the electronics package in the remote; it won't work without them. The "brain" in the unit senses when a button is pushed and which one. It then knows what the operator wants the remotely controlled unit to do. The electronics package selects a special data string, pulse code or other named "signal" that it then sends to the controlled unit to tell it what to do. In the case of a TV or the like, the signal is sent via a pulsing IR LED (infrared light emitting diode) to a receiver in the TV, and the TV responds. In the case of a 'bot or a remoted controlled car, truck or flying vehicle, the electronics package in the transmitter figures out what the operator wants and then converts that into a signal that is modulated onto a radio frequency (RF) carrier. This signal is then transmitted throught the air (wirelessly) to the vehicle. The receiver in the vehicle then picks up the signal, converts it back into the code that was sent so that it knows what the operator wants, and then actuates the appropriate functions in the vehicle to make that happen. The remote must determine what the operator wants the remotely controlled item to do. It must then select the appropriate message to send to the item to tell it that. It then must send that message to the remotely controlled item via a pulsed light beam or as a message riding on a radio frequency carrier. The RC item then receives the message and responds. *Note: There are a couple of other options other than IR and RF, but those two are the most common means to get a signal to the controlled unit.
