well a lightning rod will help a structure by channelling the lightning round the structure rather than on it and it will send the lightning into the ground so it cant hurt anything/anyone

a simpler explanation would be that it channels the lightning away from the structure

oh by the way I am 12 years old

Do wooden lightning rods work?

Wooden lightning rods do not work as effectively as metal lightning rods because wood is not a good conductor of electricity. Metal lightning rods are used to protect structures from lightning strikes by providing a path for the lightning to safely travel to the ground.

Are lightning rods necessary?

Lightning rods can help protect structures by providing a path for lightning to follow safely to the ground, reducing the risk of damage from lightning strikes. While not mandatory, they can be a valuable addition to a building's lightning protection system in areas prone to thunderstorms.

WHY is it placed on top of the building the ligthing rod?

Because lightning is always attracted to the highest points. Lightning rods are attached to long, insulated cables which lead down to the ground - and are anchored deep in the earth. Placing a lightning conductor at the very top of a building, almost guarantees that any strike will be conducted safely down to earth.

What is a rod made of?

There are a variety of rods, such as curtain rods, lightning rods, stirring rods, etc. They are generally made from metal or wood, but stirring rods can be made of glass or plastic.

What would happen if lightning rod was made of an insulating material?

If a lightning rod were made of an insulating material, such as rubber or plastic, it would not be able to conduct the electrical charge from a lightning strike. Therefore, it would not effectively serve its purpose of providing a path for the lightning to travel safely to the ground, potentially increasing the risk of damage to the structure it is meant to protect.

Do lightning rods really work to protect buildings from lightning strikes?

Yes, lightning rods are effective in protecting buildings from lightning strikes by providing a path for the electrical current to safely travel to the ground, reducing the risk of damage to the structure.

Who invented lightning rods on buildings?

Benjamin Frankiln. To protect buildings from lightning

What do lighting rods do?

Lightning rods are metal rods placed on top of buildings to protect them from being struck by lightning. The rods provide a path of least resistance for the lightning to follow, directing the electrical current safely into the ground to prevent damage to the structure.

How do lighting rods work to protect buildings from lightning strikes?

Lightning rods work by providing a path of least resistance for lightning to follow, directing the electrical current safely into the ground instead of through the building. This helps protect the building from damage caused by a direct lightning strike.

How effective are lightning rods in protecting buildings from lightning strikes?

Lightning rods are effective in protecting buildings from lightning strikes by providing a path for the electrical current to safely travel to the ground, reducing the risk of damage to the structure.

Are lightning rods effective in protecting buildings from lightning strikes?

Yes, lightning rods are effective in protecting buildings from lightning strikes by providing a safe path for the electrical current to travel to the ground, reducing the risk of damage to the structure.

Do lightning rods attract lightning, and if so, how do they protect buildings from being struck?

Yes, lightning rods attract lightning by providing a path of least resistance for the electrical charge to follow. When lightning strikes, the rod conducts the electricity safely to the ground, preventing it from damaging the building.

How do lightning rods work to protect buildings from lightning strikes?

Lightning rods work by providing a path of least resistance for lightning to follow, directing the electrical charge safely into the ground. This helps prevent the lightning from striking the building directly, reducing the risk of damage or fire.

What device did Benjamin Franklin invent to protect buildings and ships from lightning damage?

Lightening rods.

What did Ben Franklin invent to protect people and buildings from lightning?

Lightning rods, metal spikes placed on roofs attached to a grounding wire.
